A Piece of Chicago Graffiti History
Back when I ran my business, I had the chance to film a rare interview with Flash from the legendary ABC Crew on PowerStyle Radio. For those who know Chicago’s graffiti history, ABC Crew helped shape the city’s scene in the early ’80s — turning neighborhood connections, hip-hop, and pure creativity into something that still inspires artists today.
During the interview, Flash talked about how ABC started, the early days of graffiti in Chicago, and his ongoing work documenting the culture through a book that covers 1973–2003. He emphasized the importance of representing the entire city, especially the South Side voices that helped build this movement.
Flash also spoke about the old ABC website that connected artists from around the world — and how it had to be changed once police began using it to track graffiti writers. His words were real and powerful: graffiti isn’t just art, it’s expression, resistance, and community.
He reminded everyone that no matter what laws or bans come, graffiti will never stop — it just evolves. “You take something away, they’ll come with something back,” he said.
Filming that moment was an honor. It captured not just a story, but a piece of Chicago’s creative soul.
